"Rangi Taranga" Kannada film review - a beautiful, colourful wave, indeed, in Kannada cinema...

Debutant director Anup Bhandari and Directors of Photography Lance Kaplan & William David are quite the heroes of this enterprise, for their beautiful depiction of Dakshina Kannada . H K Prakash and the production team have invested wisely in utilizing the services of these international cinematographers, thus depicting their uncompromising nature, in this department. Avantika Shetty plays Sindhu, a journalist, in search of novelist Anashku (pseudonym). Parallelly, Gautham Suvarna takes his pregnant wife Indu to Kamarottu village for a Bhootaradhana (literal translation: Bhoota - ghost; Aradhana - worship) ritual. They are greeted by strange happenings and characters, right from their arrival. Rafiq, postmaster Kalinga and the elderly headmaster Shankara are characters that they befriend, here. Watch the film to see how events unfold pretty interestingly... The blending of the folklore concepts, like Bhootaradhana and the Guddadha Bhoota, into the script enriches it

"Kataka" Kannada film review - Bad acting and graphics make this ridiculous...

I had recently felt that with Thupparivaalan , and now with this one - Kataka . I picked this one following the buzz around this film. A school teacher, Kumar , fed up of city-life (read Bengaluru), returns to his home-town with his wife and daughter, wanting to start his own school there. During the drive home, his daughter is affected by sorcery, via energy transfer when she breaks a fish-bowl at a pit-stop in Kollam (Kerala). But then, the actual story takes place somewhere in coastal Karnataka. I was quite confused about the Kollam connection, as they highlighted the place (and that's it) at the beginning of the film, which doesn't come anywhere en route between Bangalore and that part of Karnataka where the story is centred! "Sicario" review: Takes off where "Zero Dark Thirty" kind of cinema left... brilliant!

If you enjoyed The Hurt Locker or Zero Dark Thirty , chances are you'll love this! It deserves atleast four* Oscar nominations - Best Background Score, Best Cinematography, Best Direction and Best Film. ( * Mind you, del Toro is exceptionally good, too; just that his kind of role may not fall into the Oscar jury's consideration. Else there'd be a fifth !) What I liked most about Sicario is that this is a kind of film that dwells more on the characterization rather than the subject... And one can learn from Sheridan and Villeneuve how to avoid cliches off of a globally age-old subject like drug trafficking, and instead make it complex and original!
