Review: "I" - could have been so much better...

The movie was average. And the more you think about it, it was sad, to be honest. But what an earnest performance by Vikram! Few actors command the kind of respect like he does... Weight loss or not, he gives it all... you just wish he had done that for a better script. One of the nicest things about Vikram, which I have seen over the years, is that he doesn't over-act. How many big stars do we see that play their characters so subtly...!?

Miss Jackson is very, very pretty to look at. Period. I hope Tamil cinema looks at better scripts, voice dubbing (annoyingly atrocious), and lesser budgets. For a while there I thought how Anurag Kashyap would have handled it! But longer was I thinking about how South Korean cinema wud have handled it as they're known for their psychological thrillers. A R Rahman's music was nothing to write home about. Only one song was worth listening to. Suresh Gopi was almost Mohanlal-like...

It is a revenge drama, mixed with a love story. And that's where the bhel-puri gets a little too mixed up. Yes, it's a genre that Sankar has been known for, over the years, but this one is a drag. It has neither a social message nor a good bunch of antagonists. And Sankar could have handled the transgender / homosexuality subject adeptly. He has made a mockery out of it, and for a film-maker that can influence the masses, that seems very narrow-minded and disrespectful. Maybe he can pick a thing or two, from another movie touching upon homosexuality - The Imitation Game, where the subject was dealt with, classily, on screen.

And what's up with South Indian movies investing in North Indian good-looking actors who are given over-the-top antagonist roles, with little investment in speaking the language...!? Atleast not so terrible that the AAAs look like EEEs... are you kidding us?? We deserve a better ride than that, film-makers... lol!

In a scene, Vikram's character tells his boss that people trust him and get influenced, when he endorses a product. And that if the product is misleading or unhealthy, then he wouldn't be a part of it. The same responsibility applies to good cinema and it's messages, too.

The beauty of people like Shankar is that they have the money and the power - to take Indian cinema to global standards. And his investment in the aesthetics, technology and action is commendable... exceptional, I'd say. So it beats me as to why he'd not invest a tenth of it on a strong script and voice dubbing...

Watch it for Vikram. You'll root for him. I have respect for his selflessness. He is a director's actor!
