Yennai Arindhaal review - Thala, thala...!!!

I had promised two good friends that I'd watch this movie with them. But then, I was riding home from work, today, and saw a crazy crowd that had gone bonkers, outside the movie theater. Being an avid cinema buff, it was irresistible. "Yennai Arindhaal " - if you know me, that is... ;)

I gave in... and the indulgence was total paisa vasool... and more...! Easily THE Tamil movie of this season and the last... And the one before that!! Ajith is in the best role of his life, yet.

When was the last time you saw a silver-haired hero in Indian cinema, playing the dude! Possibly Ajith, in his other recent outings. Full marks to Thala for trusting himself and the script; and moreover the director, for taking this wonderful risk. It sure could be the men's biggest hit of their careers.

Trisha makes an impact in the short time that she appears on screen. She makes a lovely pair with Ajith.

Arun Vijay has done a remarkable job on slimming and toning down to a Hrithik-like physique and look, to play a role that could easily revive his career. He has given a refreshing tone to Victor. Many a time during the movie, I thought I was watching Hrithik Roshan himself...

Ashish Vidyarthi dubs well for his role. Glad they did not stretch him, making it look comical. But the man sure has come a long distance, in his decade-and-a-half innings in Tamil cinema. So much so that his role was so much better compared to Vivek's, who you wish had more to offer, in the comic department. Anushka seemed like she was having a bad hair-day. Thought she was there to add the bells and whistles.

This is a signature Gautham Menon movie, with excellent music and slick action sequences. I did tap my feet to some good rock music scores, all through. It is a formula movie that can be considered a good example of "the Hero's journey": beaten up by the Intermission and coming back with a bang, post interval...

Yennai Arindhaal is a new high that Ajith has set for himself, He sure has a lot to thank his director for. Like a million other Ajith fans, I hope that his next one is top-notch, too. Only time will tell; but for now, "Thala, Thala...!!!" May the fever continue...

Very good review Sekhar. As a Ajith fan i really expect a lot from him. He is the only Mass hero in today's world who can convert mass to class audience or convert B and C to A centers... I hope he continues this ...

Very good write up :)

Totally agreed. I am no Thala fan (although I love Gautham) and what I enjoy about this movie is that it is just beautiful. This isn't a mass hero movie, it's a protagonist's journey's one. The friendship-betrayal angle, rivalry, father-son/father-daughter relationships, action, realisticness, and great fusion of a cop and family film is just amazing to me. One of Kollywood's best movies without a doubt.
