"Masss (Massu Engira Masilamani)" review - should have simply been "M(y) ASS..."

That's what the director and the leading man seemed to tell, through this film. To the audiences, of the script.

Out of 121 crore people in India, even if a mere 10% drink juice for ₹10 daily, then for a month it's approximately 3600 crores!!

When we drink Pepsi and Coca-Cola, this 3600 crores goes out of our country.

Pepsi and Coca-Cola companies are getting more than 7000 crores every day.

Drink sugar-cane juice or tender coconut or fresh juices and save the 7000 crores of our country and give them to our farmers.

None of our farmers will commit suicide then.

When we consume fresh juices it will in turn give income to one crore people for their living.

Later the juice available for ₹10 will be available for ₹5.

Support Indian goods and make our country financially strong.

Please ensure that this message reaches at least three persons. Don't stop the flow.

Buy and support Indian goods and save our country. If all Indians stop buying foreign products for a span of 90 days then India will become the second richest country in the world.  In just 90 days our ₹2 will be equivalent to 1 dollar.
We forward so many jokes and messages and greetings, let us forward this message so that it reaches all the Indians.

JAI HIND!!!!!!!!

Venkat Prabhu and Surya - I received the forward above on WhatsApp today.

I think it is your social responsibility to forward or pass on that message - twice. Once as it good to spread this awareness, to fellow Indian citizens, and two because you made made a disastrously irresponsible film. We hear of artists' freedom, but this is not art. This is the kind of movie that makes a cinema lover scream out, "STOP taking us for a ride! Give us some quality cinema that you are capable of, especially since you are stars that people look up to..."

I feel it is your moral obligation to make up with at least two meaningful movies, now, after this movie that just stares you in the face with, "Surya is the superstar; Anything that Surya touches turns into gold. Surya can do anything. Surya..." Pretty much like Tamil's own Kick!

Looks like Surya and Venkat Prabhu met... they discussed how it is the season of horror and supernatural subjects in Kollywood... and decided to do a movie and rake in the moolah simply because the audiences lap up anything that spells horror... grrr!

Maasilamani (Surya) is a con-man and thief, who, with his soulmate and best friend, Jetu (Premgi Amaren) go about robbing the rich to make a living. They have an accident while fleeing after one such 'heist' and Massilamani gets the power to see the living dead. Or the dead living. Then comes in vampires and spirits, which could have been better implemented both technology-wise and story-wise. Throw in another Surya (a vampire this one) and a villain to make it a revenge masala movie, yet again, that has many faults in the storyline. People get killed and disappear like marbles at the beach. The cops and forensic sciences are conveniently ignored, and you just sigh, "Really?!".

What was Nayantara doing in the movie? She is a joy to watch when she acts in meaningful roles and she must have just done this for the money. I'd be disappointed with my lines and screen-time, if I were her. There is also a 'second heroine' Pranitha Subhash... well, let me just say that the two of them were merely the bells and whistles, here.

The film is pretty lengthy with no good fillers in the script. Even the action sequences were pretty mundane.

Some positives from the film?
  • Surya's acting, especially with the Sri Lankan accent. If only he chose meaningful scripts...
  • The chemistry between Surya and Premgi Amaren is very good.
  • Parthiepan plays a police officer to woo the masses and support our hero Surya's case in the film, with his one-liners, post intermission. He has more lines that Nayantara and Pranathi Subhash, put together, one can assume.
  • The Poochandi song and the main theme music (by Yuvan Shankar Raja) are very catchy... He has given a pretty good soundtrack for the mass audiences.
  • The title. It intends to be a "mass" entertainer, though with many loopholes in the plot.
  • The picturization of a song - it was either Piravi or Naan Avan Illai, where he wears the Michael Jackson outfit - which had some good special effects.
But the vampire fitment seems more spooFy than spooKy!

Masss is pathetic... kevalam, as they say in Tamil.

I go with -1.5 out of 5 for this silly attempt.

Worst Film.. Started to get respect for Kanchana 2... Surya's expressions are extinct... Te cant emote anymore or emote differently. He is still in hangover of Singam series with his anger look and 7am Arivu's smile. Thats sum's up his character in all his recent films. VP has lost his touch or may be this film is taken in hurry to release it for summer holidays. Nayantara does a guest role :P ... By they way Sekar you are very generous to give 1.5 Rating for the film :D
