O Kadhal Kanmani review - emotions captured sublimely

Mani Ratnam's story is not the most complex. But few film-makers capture human relationships and emotions as beautifully as he does.

A R Rahman's music is top notch. So is the capturing of Mumbai, through the eyes (and camera) of P C Sreeram.

The director relies ever so worthily on the lead pair, Dulquer Salmaan and Nithya Menen, who pull off their characters so fabulously well. One would so easily fall in love with Nithya Menen's character as one would have with Kareena Kapoor's in Jab We Met.

The chemistry between Prakash Raj and Leela Samson is serene, and a friend suggested that it might have been heavily influenced by Amour.

When it comes to rain scenes, Mani Ratnam is the ace storyteller who has reprised this talent again here, after Nayagan, Thalapathi, Bombai, Iruvar, Alaipayuthey and Dil Se... why, even Guru!

Not to mention the search for loved ones in the rains, as Madhavan did in Alaipayuthey.

Life is about doing the simple things beautifully. That's what Mani Ratnam and his cast and crew succeed in, in O Kadhal Kanmani. It's refreshing and he takes off from where he had a pit-stop, after Alaipayuthey. He sure has moved in well with the times, and handles the urban India take on live-in relationships with elan. I also found the title credits to be refreshing and upbeat - like hatke se.

One may get nostalgic and observe how similar Alaipayuthey and O Kadhal Kanmani are - right from the train sequences to searching for loved ones in the rain; not to mention the couple's explorations of daily life, once they start living together, and even the computer experts that the heroes are, in both the films! I'm pretty sure Madhavan would be reminded of how his stardom soared exponentially when he looks at Dulquer Salmaan, who fortunately does not overact and is a total natural.

The graphics in the games could have been better but the effort is sincere.

The effort is super substantial and my intuition makes me look forward to the lead actor and the director's Kannathil Muthamittal, meaning Mani's and Dulquer's next classy venture together.
