"Spy" English film review - Jason Statham and Melissa McCarthy have a joy-ride in this Paul Feig action comedy...

Spy was just okay-okay for me... I liked Kingsman: The Secret Service more and there was nothing new in this... though it was fun watching Jason Statham, in possibly his first full-fledged comic role.

While I am not a big fan of slapstick comedy, there were some hilarious lines, like -

Rick Ford: I watched the woman I love get tossed from a plane and hit by another plane mid-air. I drove a car off a freeway on top of a train while it was on fire. Not the car, I was on fire.
Susan Cooper: Jesus, you're intense!

Bradley Fine (a fine CIA agent) is killed in the hunt for a nuclear bomb and his mission lands in the lap of his guide, voice and help Susan Cooper, who always had a soft corner for her "Fine" and suave man. How lady Susan goes deep undercover to save the world from getting nuked forms the rest of the pretty predictable but funny film. From Bulgaria to France to Italy to Hungary, director Paul Feig takes you around in this action comedy that gives Melissa McCarthy yet another opportunity - and role - to flaunt her hilarious persona. And boy, does she deliver a punch!

Jude Law seemed to be having a party, playing the charming CIA hit-man...

Rose Byrne was stern faced and possibly played her role well, but could have been more interesting, adding her own spices to it.

Miranda Hart is effective as Susan's best friend and delivers her lines pretty humorously, in more than one scene.

Our very own Bollywood girl Nargis Fakhri does not have many lines to mouth but she does get an action sequence or two to flaunt her fit physique.

I did enjoy the Bond-like soundtrack when the opening credits rolled.

What I also liked was how stars like Jude Law and Jason Statham agreed to play second fiddle to the underdog Melissa, allowing her to walk away with the cake. The good thing is that she shares it with the two pretty amicably. For now, the genre of spy spoofs and action comedy continues to roll at the English box office.

I'd go with 2.5 out of 5 for this one.
