"Vascodigama" Kannada movie review - What the fish!

There is "3 Idiots". That's one end of the spectrum, conveying the beautiful message of "Follow your passions, dreams." 'Rancho' questions the education system and brings about changes around him inspiringly.

Then, we have Sandalwood director Madhu Chandra, who exhibits the other side of the same spectrum, replete with over-the-top and preachy scenes, horrible performances, blinking (and annoying) camera work, bad screenplay, etc.

Apt for the adage, The intentions were good, but the actions certainly weren't... He means well to intend to convey that there is a difference of day and night between what's taught in the textbooks in schools/colleges, and question the education system, but this project is a disaster!

Kishore is pretty defective here, and one may excuse him. Why? Because there are actors (like Ranbir Kapoor, if you want an example) who just ARE, and there are those who need the director to bring out the best in them. Our protagonist here seems to fall clearly into the latter category. So, if you get disappointed that you don't get to see the genius side of his acting talent in this film, then the culprit is the director.

Parvathy Nair is just a pretty face and has nothing more to offer. She had mentioned in an interview that back in school, she was part of the team that made the longest painting in the world. And I cannot help but wonder if she is better off as an artist than as an artiste.

Poornachandra Tejaswi's music is worthless.

The director needs to better his story telling skills and he may start off by being subtle. For instance, there is this piece where the rebel students try to get back at their teachers by hacking into the attendance system. The choice of the subject and the sequence itself is gibberish, and people were staring at each other wondering, "Seriously!!?"... it was that bad. And there were all these instances where people on screen would just jump into a song and dance sequence, totally disconnected from the context or the flow.

All in all, there was not one department that stood out. Don't watch this one, even if you have nothing else to do.
