The story by itself is noteworthy, but one may better reach out for the book, rather than the film, whose primary pluses are the language and the background music by Sadhu Kokila (which stands out), besides some nice locales. Yes, the rural touch was laced with some pleasing greenery.
I felt that the best performance was from Rahul Madhavan - he stood out from the rest by a mile-and-a-quarter. :)
Next, I enjoyed the simpleton "Loose Maada" Yogesh's role and it brought some good laughs. Too bad he was there in a couple of reels only!
Shwetha Srivatsav was decent and helms the female cast pretty well.
Sharath Lohitashwa was believable as the Swamy and veteran Achyuth Kumar supports him well, too.
Otherwise, the acting was over-the-top, and make up too heavy, especially on the ladies...
Kishore tries too hard, and that left me a little disappointed, as he was amongst my favourite actors... until I watched Vascodigama and this. Subtlety is the name of the game, especially in such topics, where you have to make it look natural.
Sukratha Wagle was too loud and annoying... bah! :D
The ever-reliable Prakash Belawadi, for once, seemed out of sorts. Slapstick comedy may not be his forte, yet.
The movie was 20-25 mins too long. It had potential, though, and what made it worse was the only authentic thing about it - the language - which by itself was censored... pray, why was that needed? There was no need for the Censor Board to mutilate by muting the expletives, since the rawness of the rural language makes such movies even more authentic - and enjoyable.
The topics discussed in the film, though, are timeless and relevant - caste, superstition, mind-games. Shakuni maama!! There were moments post intermission where I thought that the story has the potential of an Omkara.
As for the direction, like our character played by Kishore would say, ondhu 'misteek' aag bittaithi - summane build-up kottu ashtondu complex story-ne illa. To translate, the one big mistake, as Kishore's character might say, was that I felt like all the build-up was for no reason. There were times when I felt like I was watching a serial on television, and that's where good editing and screenplay may have aided Suman Kittur give this more of a movie-feel.
The technicians seem to have done a decent job.
Please watch it for the effort - first half wasteu; the second half looked good till the end. Looks like there is going to be a sequel, from what I understood from what was mentioned on the screen.
