"Lights Out" film review - Skillful, concise and some genuine spine-chilling moments...

Did I tell you: I lo...ouve authentic horror movies! Authentic is the keyword.

The first half of Lights Out is just that, with one of the most impressive opening sequences in the horror film genre.

Little brother Martin experiences difficult times living with his mother who has conversations with her friend. Is it a hallucination? Is her friend for real? He takes the help of his elder sister Rebecca to get to the root of things.

It holds it's tacit pace for half of the second half, too. Then, the writers seemed to have hit a writers' block, when they ran out of script or ideas, and it gets flimsy and a little silly towards the end.

There is a mental, delusional part. Then, there's the supernatural flavor towards the... well, no spoilers, right! It should have stayed either one way or the other and thus what starts out as a fine horror experience gets a little 'blahful' eventually. That's where the writers needed to be more careful, for what makes or mars such movies is the moment of realisation. The uncovering of the mystery... it better be good!

However, it does have more than a few genuine spine-chilling moments and justifies it's great run at the box office.

The film's major pluses -
  • no body parts flying around and no gore; the lights (out)...
  • I liked that they keep the dark parts dark, without much revelation.
  • It's running time is just an hour and twenty minutes, and you tend to wish for more!
The director could have focused a little more on the actors' performances, for a lot of times, great performances can conceal such loopholes.
  • Maria Bello is the most impressive of the lot.
  • Teresa Palmer is very pretty to look at.
  • Alexander DiPersia could have held his own, but doesn't emote convincingly.
  • Gabriel Bateman is not only a cute kid, but also does a fairly decent job.
  • Billy Burke, in a short role, is adept.
Am hoping that the Lights Out 2, which has just been announced, gets even better. :)

My verdict3.5 out of 5.
