12 Strong English film review - Movie of the season...

I've always been fascinated by good war movies. To me, it seems like one of the most difficult genres. And high budget.

Anything that involves army combat must need skill and technical wizardry, in my opinion. This one is based on true events, and is an adaption of the book, Horse Soldiers, by Doug Stanton.

The war scenes must've been very difficult to shoot/make. Director Nicolas Fuglsig could have added more tension to the actual tension on the ground, for it seems too slick in most places, and could have picked up cues from The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty.

In the aftermath of the September 2011 WTC attacks, 12 men are sent on a mission to Afghanistan, under a captain that has never really been to war before... to capture Mazar-i-Sharif, taken over by the Al Qaeda.
And unbelievably, all of them return home, victorious. Al Qaeda still regards it as their worst defeat ever.

Chris Hemsworth is decent and is well-supported by Michael Shannon.  Special mention to the screenplay for IMAX by Ted Tally and Peter Craig.

My verdict: 4 out of 5, with an additional half mark just for the war scenes.
